Weight Loss and Weight Management Programs

weight-loss-girl2

We know that losing weight can be a very difficult undertaking. We understand that frustration with weight loss can lead to an apathetic attitude or resignation to being overweight. Therefore, we work hard to make our weight loss programs as simple and convenient as possible. We also believe that the solution for each patient may be unique. We work with you to reach your goals and to increase your quality of life while decreasing your risk for heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure.

Before starting a program, you will undergo a non-invasive comprehensive evaluation that enables us to create a customized weight management program for you.

A Pharmaceutical Approach

Phentermine®, “The Diet Pill” – This common approach represents the accepted standard method in physician-assisted weight loss. It has been proven, through numerous clinical trials, to be both safe and effective. Individuals utilizing this approach typically lose 3-5 pounds per month so long as they also restrict calorie intake and participate in a modest exercise program.

Contrave® – This is a combination medication that contains 2 medicines (natrexone and bupropion HCL) that may help some overweight adults who also have weight-related medical problems. Contrave® should be used in combination with a reduced-calorie diet and regular exercise. The combination of the two drugs that make up Contrave® are thought to decrease cravings of sugary or high carbohydrate foods. Contrave® dosing is done on an escalating schedule that your provider will guide you through.

Qysmia® – This is a new FDA-approved prescription combination of phentermine (appetite suppressant) and topiramate (seizure/migraine medication). Together, the two work by increasing your metabolic rate and controling hunger. Qysmia® should be used in conjunction with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity for chronic weight management.

Saxenda® – This is an FDA-approved injectable prescription medicine that, when used with a low-calorie meal plan and increased physical activity, may help some overweight adults who also have weight-related medical problems. Your body naturally produces glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), which helps regulate your appetite. Saxenda® works like GLP-1 and may decrease your appetite and impact calorie intake.

Victoza® – This is an injectable prescription medicine that may improve blood sugar (glucose) in adults with type 2 diabetes and should be used along with diet and exercise. Victoza® works in 3 ways to lower blood sugar: slow food leaving your stomach, help prevent your liver from making too much sugar, and help the pancreas produce more insulin when your blood sugar levels are high.

Belviq® – This is a serotonergic drug that works by turning on a specific switch to increase levels of the brain messenger serotonin in order to suppress appetite. This, in turn, allows you to lower the amount of calories you consume. Belviq® should be used along with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

Regimex® – This prescription medication contains the anorectic agent, benzphetamine hydrochloride used to help suppress your appetite. Regimex® is approved for short-term use as part of an overall weight loss program that includes exercise, caloric restriction in your diet, and other behavioral modifications.

An Alternative Approach

hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) has an effect on metabolism. It is believed to work in the primitive part of the brain in several ways. The first is to suppress the notion of hunger. The second is to stabilize blood sugars. Another is to enhance the conversion of fat stored in the body to an energy source the body can utilize. Of course, this approach is not without controversy. The FDA has declared the above claims are not true. However, in my professional and personal experience, it has proven to be effective in achieving rapid weight loss without significant safety concerns. Patients lose between 0.5 pounds and 2 pounds per day, depending on many factors. It is important to utilize a doctor experienced in the use of HCG for weight if you choose this approach. It is not easy on your body to endure. However, it is surprisingly easy to comply with the protocol despite its very stringent guidelines.

A Natural Approach

This consists of an exercise regimen, a calorie restricted diet, a composition restricted diet and a behavioral modification program. Nutraceutical supplements are an important part of any comprehensive weight management program. The goal is to help you live a natural, healthy lifestyle without the use of “miracle drugs” and without the frustration of diets that make unrealistic promises and guarantees.
